Polka-Dot Birthday Cupcakes

The modern colors of these cupcakes make them sophisticated enough to serve at your next dinner party, but the polka-dots keep them fun. To really raise the bar, use a gourmet chocolate cupcake recipe or filling.

Bakery/Cake Goods Needed:

  • Your favorite batch of chocolate cupcakes
  • Pre-made batch of fondant
(since this fondant will be used to cover your cupcake cake, we recommend that you make a fresh recipe rather than use pre-made)
  • Small recipe for butter cream frosting

Polka Dot Decoration Supplies:

  • 1 small batch of white and chocolate fondant
    (homemade or store bought)
  • Green Food Coloring
(we used Wilton’s paste food color in Moss Green)
  • Metal round shaped cutters
(we used the 1/2″ round cutter from Wilton’s Round Fondant Cut-outs)
  • Small rolling pin
  • Food-safe paint brush

Cupcake Fondant Decorating Tools:

  • Rolling Pin
  • 2” Round Cookie Cutter

Finishing Touches:

  • Brown cupcake liners

Directions for Covering the Cupcake with fondant:

Step 1: With the rolling pin, roll out the fondant on a flat surface. With the 2″ cookie cutter, cut out round shapes from the fondant.

Step 2: Ice the tops of the cupcakes with a small amount of butter cream and lay a fondant circle on top. Gently pull the fondant so it comes as close to the cupcake liner as possible.

Directions for making the polka dots:

Step 1: Color small ball of fondant green. Roll each out on a flat surface. Cut out 1/2″ circles with round cutters.

Step 2: Repeat this step with the chocolate fondant.

Decorating Cupcakes:

Step 1: Using the food-safe paint brush and water, wet the back side of each colored fondant circle and attach to cupcakes.

Step 2: Your polka-dot cupcake is complete! Feel free to add other embellishments if you like.
